What to do during this COVID-19 lockdown extension

Due to high rise of cases of covid-19 virus in Nigeria, the Federal Government on April 13th extended the lockdown it earlier imposed in the nation by another two weeks. Wow! We did not expect it to come, as it was a big blow to us. All we wanted was our lives back and this is making us tired and exhausted. But, we know that imperative of  staying at home and social distancing as the key for the containment of the virus.

We can still make use of this extension well apart from watching movies, sleeping, eating and even chatting on the internet. We can do other things to keep us going this period like:

Getting to learn a skill: This is an avenue to learn that skill, you have passion for. This opportunity should be utilized well and not wasted. You can learn a skill like make-up, organic cream making, baking, Ankara shoes etc by going online and making use of Google, YouTube etc. There are many educative and learning platforms like Alison, Coursera, Udemy where you can learn different courses on human resources management, soft skills development, Information technology, marketing and so many others. Don’t tell me you are tired, go online and utilize this opportunities.

Deep cleaning your home: This is kind of refreshing but more- tasking once you get into it, the feeling at the end is worth it because it relieves mental stress. When I mean deep cleaning, I am not talking about the regular cleaning; deep cleaning reaches the deep grime and dirt in your home. Some deep cleaning tasks are washing all blinds, cleaning all the kitchen appliances and surfaces, cleaning the windows and doors, full and deep dusting to remove cobwebs, scale removal from bathroom tiles, taps, kitchen tiles, shower head etc, rearranging your bedroom and living room etc. All this helps to keep busy during this lockdown.

Read: This period offers you the opportunity to read and you know reading is fun! It is not a must to read textbooks and journals; you can decide to have a pleasurable reading by reading novels, magazine, and newspaper. Thank God to technology, we can go online and read novels, you can read novels on Wattpad, or you can search Google for Vipnovels, boxnovels etc and you will be wowed with their wide range of interesting stories. With reading, you learn new things, words and grammatical structures.

Start a book club with your loved ones and friends: Interesting right? Starting a book club bring people together and make books come alive through the exchange of ideas, perspectives, and dialogue. Organizing a book club will keep you engaged and technology has made it easier, why not chat up your loved ones and friends to start up one by going to Google play store download app like Goodreads, Bookfeed, Wattpad etc and get your loved ones and friends engaged this period.

Work Out: You have been eating and sleeping this period; why not work out to keep fit and stay healthy and avoid gaining extra weight this period by engaging in skipping, running around your home, push-ups etc. You can still search Google and YouTube for work out you can do at home without having to go to Gym this period of Covid-19 virus because social distancing.

Meditate: This lockdown has affected us in some many ways and to find that inner peace, we need meditation. When we meditate, new idea comes and by so doing breathing new life into our mind to relieve stress. Practicing of Yoga is important as it helps in controlling individual’s mind, body and soul and this helps us to achieve focus and give clarity to our ideas.

Always remember that we will come out alive and by doing the above things listed, we are coming out more skilled and happier.

Finally, we should not forget to protect ourselves by doing the following below :

  • Frequent washing of hands with soap under running water r for at least 30 seconds or use alcohol-based sanitiser if water is not available,
  • Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness. Maintain at least 2 metres (5 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing repeatedly
  • Cover your mouth and nose properly with a tissue paper when sneezing and/or coughing. Dispose of the tissue properly immediately after use. You may also cough into your elbow if a tissue is not available.
  • Do not mingle with people or congregate if you feel unwell with symptoms like fever, cough, sneezing or difficulty breathing.
